6 Errors Homeowners Make When Hiring Remodelers

Posted on April 23, 2025May 9, 2025 by At Home With Joanna

Hiring a remodeler can be an exciting step toward making your dream space a reality. However, choosing the wrong one can lead to headaches, wasted money, and delays. The truth is, plenty of homeowners make the same errors when choosing a contractor. Learning what to avoid can save you from unnecessary problems, so let’s break down six errors homeowners make when hiring remodelers.

Basing the Decision on One Referral

Trusting a friend or family member’s experience with a contractor they hired may seem like the best move. However, relying solely on someone else’s words can lead to problems. What worked for their project may not suit yours. For example, their remodeler might specialize in kitchens while you need someone for a bathroom revamp.

Always confirm the remodeler’s credentials, check multiple reviews, and ensure their work aligns with your needs. Thorough research can prevent mismatched expectations and disappointment.

Ignoring a Contractor’s Portfolio

A home remodeling contractor’s portfolio reveals their level of craftsmanship and whether their style matches your vision, so make sure to review it carefully. If you skip this step, you’ll risk hiring someone who can’t deliver what you want. Review their past projects, and ask about challenges they overcame with similar work. This helps you gauge their capabilities and whether they are suited for your project plans.

Failing To Check Licensing and Insurance

Don’t forget to verify the contractor’s credentials and insurance coverage before hiring them. Proper licensing ensures they meet professional standards, and insurance protects you if something goes wrong. Without these, you’re putting yourself at financial and legal risk. For instance, you could be liable if an unlicensed worker gets injured on the job.

Automatically Going for the Lowest Bid

Unfortunately, a low price from a home contractor often hides vague or incomplete details. For instance, a remodeler’s estimate might only mention the basics of a bathroom remodel but leaves out plumbing costs. An important question to ask when hiring a bathroom remodeling contractor is if you can see a detailed estimate ahead of time. The paperwork should outline everything in the project, from materials to labor.

Skipping Written Contracts

Skipping written contracts is another error homeowners make when hiring remodelers. Although handshake agreements seem more casual and friendly, they leave you open to miscommunication. Without a written contract, you have no clear path for accountability. Over time, misaligned assumptions about plans can cause delays or extra charges. A good contract outlines everything related to budget and timelines.

Overlooking Communication Styles

Your remodeler might be great at their craft, but if their communication style doesn’t align with yours, the process can quickly become frustrating. For example, a contractor who mainly communicates through vague updates or waits until problems arise to share details can leave you feeling out of the loop. On the other hand, some homeowners assume they’ll “figure it out” as they go, only to regret the lack of clear dialogue. Look for someone who offers regular progress updates and makes time to answer questions.
