Review
You all know that I am obsessed with food and anything related to cooking, (and Gordon Ramsay). It will come as no surprise to you that I had been anxiously awaiting for Burnt to be released. Luckily for me, I got the surprise of being able to see it yesterday. I am still feeling the emotions I left the theatre with.
Bradley Cooper
Cooper offers a fantastic performance portraying a Gordon Ramsay-esque role in a kitchen. Growing up, Cooper wanted to be either an actor or a chef- this film allowed him to be both at the same time. We all know that he can speak French ever since the interview he did (watch it here). That interview had women all over the world melting. Hearing him speak French throughout this film is a treat in itself.
Is there anything better than watching someone, (especially an attractive man like Cooper) cook? “There’s no cooking double for Adam Jones,” says the American Sniper actor. “Everything in the movie I’m actually doing. The stakes were high,” he says. “Every day I felt the pressure of having to deliver.”- Yahoo! Celebrity
According to the rest of the Yahoo! Celebrity article, Cooper was not the only one who had to prepare for the film by spending hours on end in the kitchen. John Wells, the director, spent over 18-hours a day in Michelin-star restaurants and consulted with Marcus Wareing, Gordon Ramsay, and Mario Batali. I have loved John Wells for years and I think he did an amazing job in directing this film.
Sienna Miller
Sienna Miller was also very impressive. I must admit, I am not very aware of too many films she has previously been in. She was never someone who stood out to me so I rarely took notice of her before. Her role in this film definitely changed that. I thought she was brilliant. Miller also had to spend time under Wareing’s wing.
Wareing told Bonappetit.com how he helped coach the actors into looking like real-life chefs: “I made [them] cook. I made them chop things, butcher things, do all of that. And as they did it over and over and over again, they got tired, they got hot, they got frustrated – they started to look like chefs. It’s brilliant.”
Emma Thompson is another one of my favorite actresses and while she doesn’t have a major role, she is still the perfect fit for this film. Daniel Bruhl and Matthew Rhys also give stellar performances and without them, the film would not be what it is.
Overall
I definitely recommend this movie to anyone who loves food as much as I do. Throughout the film, I cried about three times. I laughed several times and my heart was warmed. There were moments when I was sitting on the edge of my seat. Sometimes, it was because I was nervous about certain scenes. For others, I was excited or upset.
Mostly, I just wanted to get closer to the gorgeous food. I kept wishing that I could jump into the kitchen and cook alongside everyone. It is highly enjoyable and I still have a smile on my face just thinking about it. I could watch this movie over and over again… and I intend to.
