green onions grow indoors

Growing Green Onions Indoors

Posted on September 6, 2015November 7, 2023 by At Home With Joanna

I love green onions.  They are the perfect addition to almost every dish and they can be used in so many ways.  Whether it is a baked potato topping, a garnish on a steak, used in an Asian-inspired dish, a soup, or jalapeno poppers… the list is endless.  They are inexpensive to purchase, but why not grow them yourself and save a few bucks?

To Grow Green Onions Indoors…

All you have to do is buy an initial bunch from the supermarket and place them in a glass of water.  Place them in the sunniest part of your home, and watch them regrow!

When you need some green onions for a dish, simply cut what you need off and place the white part, the bulb, back in the water. It grows so quickly- you’ll be able to have a new batch in a day or two.

You can also plant them in soil and it would have the same effect.  The same thing can be done with garlic, but I have not yet tried it.  I am obsessed with garlic so I have to try that!

Do you grow a few ingredients at home?

Please, tell me all about it!  What do you grow, and how do you grow it?  What are your favorite uses for it? If you live in an apartment and live in a climate that has different weather for all four seasons, all the better!  I love to learn, so please let me know!
