Happy Tears & Rainbow Babies

“Happy Tears & Rainbow Babies” Book Review & Giveaway

Posted on April 29, 2019January 2, 2024 by At Home With Joanna

“Happy Tears & Rainbow Babies”

As a parent who has experienced the loss of two babies, I have learned that people try to heal in their own ways. Each person’s experience with losing a child is as unique as the child themselves.

In my experience, I had to go to therapy because the pain had been too great. It simply did not register in my mind why two of my babies had to lose their lives. I turned back on the saying I had always looked to for comfort, “Everything happens for a reason”. The experience made me angrier and the saddest I had ever been. If it were not for my Son, Liam, the support from family and friends, along with therapy- I do not know where I would be right now.

I am being 100% honest- I have never been a religious person. While I support everyone’s right to their beliefs, religion was never something I believed in. When I lost the babies, people would say, “God did this for a reason”, and it made me want to scream. Yes, people were simply trying to help, but sometimes, it’s better not to say anything at all.

However, when I was asked to read “Happy Tears & Rainbow Babies” by Natasha Melissa Carlow, I was left in tears. This book tells a story of how faith brought hope and healing to a family after the devastation of miscarriage and loss.

You follow the story of Rose and Capi, two children about to learn about the loss of their siblings. Their Mommy and Daddy explain to them that other babies in Mommy’s belly did not make it to being born.

It is made clear that if the children had any questions, they did not need to be afraid to ask.

“Umm Do you still feel sad that the babies weren’t born?”

“So, Capi and I are rainbow babies?”

The entire story is filled with why rainbows are such a symbol of hope and love. While it does involve God, prayer and of faith, I was still able to connect to it in several ways.

It is beautifully written and is a great way to explain to children about the loss of a baby. It is easy to read, and is full of love between parents, their children and the babies that have passed on.

I highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling through this form of grief. If anyone wants a book that they can read to their children to help them try to understand, this is the perfect one. It teaches them that it’s okay to be sad, but love truly is everywhere.

Liam loved reading it with me, and the beautiful illustrations caught his eye right away. “There’s a moon, a rainbow, Mommy and Liam!”
