Helpful Tips for Packing Up Your Kitchen

Posted on May 10, 2025May 9, 2025 by At Home With Joanna

Packing up your kitchen can seem like an overwhelming process. Dealing with stacks of cookware, utensils, and pantry items can become a major hassle, especially if you have a large kitchen. However, with the right strategy and a little organization, the process becomes more manageable.

Whether you’re setting things aside to prepare for a home renovation or getting ready to move to a new place, these helpful tips for packing up your kitchen efficiently will ensure you protect your most delicate items.

Start With Nonessential Items

Get the harder stuff out of the way early by packing up items that aren’t used very often. Things such as seasonal cookware or specialty gadgets are easy to pack up early without causing extra inconvenience. Sorting through these nonessentials allows you to make progress without disrupting your everyday cooking.

This is also a great time to declutter and downsize your kitchen. Consider donating or selling items you no longer use to save space in your new kitchen and give you less to unpack later.

Protect Fragile Dishes Properly

Glassware, china, and other breakables require extra care during the packing process. Start by wrapping each item individually to shield it from scratches and cracks. Specialty boxes for holding and storing glasses are essential supplies for your move that can help reduce the likelihood of them breaking in transport.

Place heavier items, such as plates and serving bowls, at the bottom of boxes and lighter items on top. Label boxes containing fragile items clearly, and make sure everyone handles them with care when loading or unloading.

Keep Everyday Essentials Accessible

Another helpful tip for packing up your kitchen is preparing an essentials box. This box should include a couple of plates, bowls, utensils, and basic cooking tools. Think about what you might need before packing your whole kitchen. By keeping these close at hand, you can avoid digging through packed boxes after a long day of moving.

In this box, you may also include a few pantry staples, including salt, pepper, cooking oil, and a dish towel for cleaning up small spills. This essentials box will let you maintain regular kitchen operations without digging into every box for one or two things.

Packing your kitchen doesn’t have to be a stressful challenge. With these strategies, you’ll simplify the process and reduce the chaos that often comes with moving.
