How To Make The Most of Family Meals

Posted on May 4, 2023May 4, 2023 by At Home With Joanna

Family meals have the potential to be the best part of a person’s day. Other times, they can also be a challenge. It can be hard! Meal times are often the only time in the day that you will get some quality time with your loved ones, to share about your day and to better connect. However, they may often turn into rushed events. Especially, if family members are on different schedules.

You don’t want it to be this way forever, especially if you have growing children with an increasing amount of activities on their plates. To enjoy some quality time with your family, here are some tips you can implement right away to make it more enjoyable.

Set Aside Time To Eat Everyday

If you find that everyone seems to always be in a rush, or everyone has different events to attend, leaving you to eat separately, perhaps it is time to make a solid plan. If you can set aside time to eat every day and communicate this to your family, then you can ensure that you get to eat your meals together. When everyone agrees on a time for dinner, you will all be on the same page, ensuring an effort is being made to eat at the set time. Just make sure you pick a time that suits everyone and does not interfere with any work, hobbies, or other commitments.

With this being said, life happens! Something may come up unexpectedly causing a family meal to be impossible. Take a raincheck! Or, make a future meal even more special by adding a fun theme or making it a special “movie and dinner” night. These are memories you will not want to miss out on.

Plan in advance (and even cook in advance!)

Planning your meals in advance is one of the most effective things that you can do. Not only will you save time and money when it comes to cooking. You will also find that you can use the additional time with your family. Coming home from a long day at work, rummaging through the fridge, going to the shops, slogging over the cooker, only to be met with a limited time to eat before you move on to the next chore… that doesn’t sound like much of a plan.

Instead, you will be able to come home from work, freshen up and be in the right mindset to sit with your family. You will be less stressed and can enjoy your evening after work. Plan in advance by sitting down on the weekend and writing out all the meals you and your family wish to enjoy. This way, you can do your food shop and make sure you have everything in stock. You can also set aside the correct time to cook it. Or, you can take your preparation a step further and cook all of the meals in advance. This way they just need to heat up on the actual day.

Schedule some yummy meals and desserts

When you have a family to prepare meals for, it means that not only is planning your meals important but also the type of meal that you choose. Try to speak to your family and find out what their favorite food and meals are. If possible, try to incorporate these into the week.

You can also do some research and find some new meals that you can all try together. Meals like this sweet and sour chicken recipe, so you’re not eating the same meals each week. Make sure you include some yummy desserts into the mix as well! This is always a great addition to any meal and something that everyone looks forward to.

Cook together

Getting the whole family involved in the cooking process is an excellent way to spend more time together. You can take turns being the head chef, and each person can pick a different type of food, theme, or culture to learn about in the process. It is very likely to make mealtimes fun, as well as special, as you connect and bond over trying new things and working together as a team. Your family will learn about food and nutrition. Even more special, is that you will get more time with them as opposed to you cooking on your own and just serving the meal.

It can be extremely rewarding for all family members to eat the food they have prepared from scratch. It can also be a great conversation starter, as you will all have fun experimenting with new foods and flavors, talking about what you have learned, and planning the next meals you would like to try together.

Meal times don’t have to be rushed or boring. If you can spend some time planning, researching, and experimenting with new ways to do things, you can completely change your experience. Remember what is important, and use meal times as an opportunity to connect and spend time with your family.
