Inspiring Tips for Adding More Seating to Your Backyard

Posted on April 21, 2025May 12, 2025 by At Home With Joanna

Your backyard is a place where you make memories. However, running out of places to sit can put a halt to some of these plans! If your patio could use a creative seating upgrade, don’t worry! With a little imagination, you can create unique and affordable seating options that match your style.

Incorporate Built-In Seating

If your patio has retaining walls or raised garden beds, consider turning them into built-in seating. Add wide wooden planks on top to double the purpose of these structures.

Paint or stain the planks for a polished look and pair them with weather-resistant throw pillows for style and functionality. Built-in seating works especially well for smaller backyards, as it maximizes space without adding extra furniture.

Repurpose Old Furniture

Instead of throwing out that aging loveseat or dining bench, breathe new life into it with outdoor-friendly materials. A coat of weatherproof paint can work wonders!

Dealing with worn-out cushions? Reupholster them with fabric meant for outdoor use. This gives you the chance to personalize the piece while reducing waste. Place the revamped furniture in strategic spots throughout the yard to create cozy gathering areas.

Get Creative With Breeze Block Benches

Breeze blocks, a backyard favorite for their retro charm, also happen to make fantastic additions to any outdoor space. Why not turn them into visually stunning benches?

Stack your breeze blocks two or three high, alternating their orientation to create a sturdy base. Slide wooden planks through the open holes to form a seat, or place a long piece of wood on top. Secure the setup with some adhesive for stability, and top it off with outdoor cushions for extra comfort.

Go All-In on Adirondack Chairs

Few outdoor seating options rival the charm and simplicity of an Adirondack chair. Widely available in a range of colors, these chairs are comfortable, timeless, and work well in both large and small backyards.

Group several of them around a fire pit and hang string lights overhead to build a setting that encourages long conversations. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try assembling an Adirondack chair as a weekend DIY project.

Add Hammocks or Hanging Chairs

For a touch of relaxation, consider adding hammocks or hanging chairs to your yard. You can suspend a hammock between two sturdy trees or invest in a standalone frame.

Hanging egg chairs or swing chairs are equally appealing and give your backyard a trendy, boho look. Pair them with a good book and enjoy instant serenity.

Adding more seating to your backyard doesn’t require a pricey trip to the furniture store. With a mix of DIY solutions, clever repurposing, and strategic buys, you can create an inviting space that your guests will love. Now grab your favorite drink, take a seat, and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
