While I was anxiously waiting for Deadpool to be released, I had a Ryan Reynolds movie day. When I looked up his movies, there were a few that I hadn’t even heard of before! I love discovering new movies; don’t you?
Self/less (2015)
“A dying real estate mogul transfers his consciousness into a healthy young body, but soon finds that neither the procedure nor the company that performed it are quite what they seem.”
I will definitely have to watch this one again. It is one of his newest films and I waited quite some time to watch it. I thought that the concept of this film was really interesting. I have thought Ben Kingsley is amazing ever since I watched House of Sand and Fog. Watching him in anything is always a treat. Victor Garber was also a nice addition to the cast. It is a film that offers action while also making you think. It will probably be a film I will need to watch several times in order to truly appreciate it.
Safe House (2012)
“A young CIA agent is tasked with looking after a fugitive in a safe house. But when the safe house is attacked, he finds himself on the run with his charge.”
Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds together- need I say more? I enjoyed watching this film, but maybe that’s because I am a huge fan of Denzel Washington. I remember when this film first came out, and how excited I was to watch it. For some reason, it took me two years to finally do so. Since there had been so much time between my initial thoughts toward the ads and actually watching it, I couldn’t remember if I thought it was worth all of the hype or not. This is why I watched it again.
I enjoyed the chemistry between the main actors and the action scenes are entertaining. I will say, that I agree with the 6.8/10 rating it has on IMDb, though. It’s good but I think I let the hype make me overly excited over it for nothing. Since it is entertaining, I would watch it again if someone else wanted to see it for the first time.
The Nines (2007)

I hadn’t heard anything about this film before. When I heard that it also starred Melissa McCarthy, I was very excited for a funny film starring her and Reynolds. Did I get what I was expecting? No. I sat there wondering “What the heck am I watching?” for quite some time. It wasn’t until the very end, once it all came together, did I think that I had not wasted my time.
I love Melissa McCarthy, and Reynolds does an amazing job. The movie ends in the best way I could imagine. Once you see the whole thing, it makes you want to watch it all over again. It reminds me of how I felt after watching Memento. You want to see what you may have missed.
Chaos Theory (2008)

I love Emily Mortimer. This is another film that I had not heard of before. It was enjoyable and Reynolds does an amazing job, but I wouldn’t say it is one of my favorites. There is a plot twist that makes you feel a mixture of several feelings. You don’t know where the story will go next.
It’s worth viewing if you’re a fan of Reynolds, but don’t expect it to amaze you beyond words. I had to actually double check what the film was about while writing this. It’s pretty forgettable but a few scenes do make it worth watching at least once.
The Captive (2014)
“Eight years after the disappearance of Cassandra, some disturbing incidents seem to indicate that she’s still alive. Police, parents and Cassandra herself, will try to unravel the mystery of her disappearance.”
Out of all of the movies in this list, this is my favorite film. First of all, the cast is amazing. Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Durand, Scott Speedman, Bruce Greenwood… it’s full of actors I love. Second, the subject matter. The thought of having my child, or having any child go missing is hard to think about. Movies like this are hard to watch because of it. I like how this film is different in the way that you see what has been happening to the child throughout the film. I would definitely recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys a mystery/thriller.
