The Essentials You Cannot Miss On Moving Day

Posted on February 18, 2022May 24, 2022 by At Home With Joanna

At some point in everyone’s lives, we’re going to be confronted with having to do one of the top five most stressful things that any family can do – moving home. It is so stressful in fact, that it’s right up there with death, divorce, taxes, and getting a new job.

Several guides will help you prepare for the day in question. However, not many folks know about what you have to do on this day to ensure that you leave everything behind with good vibes and ready for the new owners to love,(hopefully, just as much as you did). So while you of course remembered Allied Van Lines to do your moving, here are a few more little tidbits for you to remember. The essentials you cannot miss on moving day include:

Leave Your Home as You Would Want to Find It

This means buying a small basket of cleaning goodies to give your home the once over before you close that front door for the last time. If you’re feeling like you want to bless the new owners – why not leave that basket of goodies behind, along with a small welcome home gift. Perhaps, a bottle of wine or chocolates. Basically, something that won’t spoil.

Remember to get into all the nitty-gritty places- the basement, the attic, the garage, along with those weird spaces behind “things” that you never seemed to get to too often. If you have it in the budget, why not arrange a specialist cleaning service for the day?

We know that you might think that this is taking things too far, but we also recommend hiring a drain cleaning service to sort all of the drains out before you leave. You wouldn’t expect to move into a home with clogged drains, so why are you expecting someone else to? Leave your home the way that you would expect to find it if you were to move in!

Bathroom Matters

Do not overlook this. You may be moving, but your ex-neighbors are not. You don’t want any sort of talk doing the rounds. You know, the “They seemed lovely – but did you see the bathroom?!” sort of thing. Take time to sanitize, clean the grouting if you need to, replace shower curtains, etc. As a courtesy, leave behind a few rolls of unopened toilet paper, and some bathroom-scented candles as a welcome home gift. If you really want to impress, leave a new hand towel – it doesn’t have to be the expensive kind.

The More Serious Matters…

So, everything is packed, and you’ve all said your emotional goodbyes to your previous home. The kids are either blindly excited or swear they’ll never talk to you again, and the dog is giving you the side-eye. Everyone is ready to go. Then, someone cuts their finger, or the stress of moving has induced a terrible headache; basically, anything you don’t want to happen happens. It’s okay, this can be fixed. You’ve got your first-aid box…somewhere…

Exactly- “somewhere”. This “somewhere” is along with road treats and the items you’re taking in the car with you. Keep items such as these to a minimum by the way. Especially, if you’re driving across the country or into another country for that matter. Simply keep your first aid box at an arm’s length – you never know what will happen.

The Time Has Come…

Give everyone time to say their goodbyes – especially your kids. We know this might sound strange, but there is something to it. Think about how emotional it is for you to leave your home behind with so many memories. This is hard even if you’re an adult. If you never moved as a child, just imagine what it’s like for your children who may be experiencing leaving somewhere they’ve known their entire lives. This is a big moment for all of you, and one that you will all remember forever.

While these are just a few of the essentials you cannot miss on moving day, there are several other ways to make this day memorable. What have you done to celebrate moving day in the past? We’d like to know!
