Top 5 Winter Pests to Watch Out For

Posted on November 4, 2022November 4, 2022 by At Home With Joanna

It’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing, the days are getting shorter, and the temperatures are dropping. Winter is settling in, and with it comes a whole new set of pests to watch out for! This post will discuss the top 5 winter pests you need to be aware of. These pests can cause all sorts of problems for your home and family, so it’s important to know how to identify them and protect yourself from them.

1) Mice

Mice are one of the most common winter pests. They are attracted to homes in search of food and shelter from the cold weather. Mice can chew on wires and insulation, contaminate food, and spread disease.

Mice move in quickly and can be difficult to get rid of, so the best defense against them is preventing them from getting in in the first place. Keep your home clean and free of food debris, and seal up any cracks or holes that mice could use to get inside.

2) Rats

Rats are another common winter pest. Like mice, they are attracted to homes, in search of food and shelter from the cold weather. They also cause the same types of issues (chewing on items, being carriers of diseases, and being noise producers).

When you suspect that you have a case of rat infestation, you need to take extra care in proofing your home against them. The preventative tips will be the same as for mice, but you may also need to set rat traps or use bait stations to get rid of them.

3) Cockroaches

Cockroaches are year-round pests, but they can be especially problematic in the winter when they move indoors in search of warmth. The potential problems that cockroaches may cause include contaminating food, spreading disease, and triggering allergies and asthma attacks.

The best defense against cockroaches is simply to keep your home clutter and garbage free. Unfortunately, they are also attracted to moisture; be sure to fix any leaks and keep your home well-ventilated. If you already have a cockroach problem, you may need to use chemicals to get rid of them.

4) Ants

While ants might not be the first pests that come to mind when you think of winter, they can actually be quite a problem during the colder months. That’s because they’re looking for warm places to build their nests. If they find their way into your home, they can be difficult to get rid of. To prevent ants from becoming a problem, make sure to seal any cracks or openings around your home and keep your food stored away in airtight containers. No one wants to wake up to a line of ants in their kitchen or pantry!

5) Termites

Termites are one of the most common winter pests. They’re attracted to wood, which makes them a problem for both homeowners and businesses. Termites can cause serious damage to buildings and are difficult to control once they are established. If you see termites in your home or place of business, it’s important to call a pest control professional right away. Ecopest is a reliable and professional pest control company that can help you get rid of these pests quickly and efficiently.

These are five of the most common winter pests. If you see any of these pests in your home, it’s important to handle the situation right away. Take action quickly and call a pest control professional who can minimize the damage and keep your property safe.
