What To Do With All The Festive Items In Your Home

Posted on January 4, 2022May 2, 2022 by At Home With Joanna

At the end of the festive season, your home can look a bit chaotic. There’s clutter everywhere from the festive season, sometimes to the point where you struggle to even navigate your own home!

The good news is that there’s a way to process all of it, and save what you need for next year. Here’s what to do:

Give Food To Guests And Visitors In Plastic Containers

If you’ve been feasting over the Christmas period, there’s little chance that you’ll be able to eat it all yourself. (Nor do you want to if you’re watching your waistline).

Instead of munching through it all yourself, give it away to people in plastic boxes. Mince pies, leftover meat, cheeses, and trifles are all wonderful parting gifts that’ll stop any food from going to waste.

Don’t just leave Christmas paraphernalia lying around the house. Put it all in storage! Simply keep it somewhere else until you actually need it again.

If other parts of your home are already full, then use a third-party site. Getting it out of your home will free up space and make it easy to embrace 2022.

Digitize Your Memories

Cards and photographs are a mainstay of the Christmas period. You want to capture memories and be able to look back at events with fondness in years to come.

Unfortunately, keeping all your physical cards just isn’t practical. If you’re like most families, you get a lot of them. Perhaps you get enough that they become a fire risk.

Try to digitize everything if you can. Get your friends and family to send you ecards. However, many people like to send physical cards, and having the writing of a loved one is priceless. There is a solution to wanting to cherish the cards while not becoming a packrat. Scan them all to files on your computer before disposing of them, and that way they will live forever.

Get Your Recycling Bins Ready

The festive season generates a lot of waste. Just think of all that wrapping paper! It’s enough to make your head spin. Not to mention plastic food containers or aluminum beverage holders.

This is why it’s a good idea to get all of your recycling bins ready in advance. Set them up in your living room or kitchen so that you can process all of the waste you generate sustainably. This way, you’re keeping your home free from clutter while cleaning up the planet at the same time. You can even return all of the bottles and cans to make some extra money at participating shopping centers depending on where you live.

Give Away Old Toys And Clothes

When it comes to your children, the festive season is also a reminder that they are growing up. If they got a cellphone this year, then there’s a good chance that they won’t be particularly interested in the pony set from last year.

Don’t be afraid to get rid of it. If it is cluttering your home and making you feel stressed, make it a priority. Just don’t forget to ask the permission of the affected child first. With your child’s permission, ask local hospitals, homeless shelters, or other related shops if they would accept your items as a donation. It’s understandable if your child is a bit hesitant about getting rid of a once cherished gift. This is definitely a good opportunity for teaching your child about the importance of sharing and giving to others.

Put The Festive Greenery On Your Compost Heap

Lastly, if you have any festive greenery lying around your home (that is genuinely organic), toss it in your compost heap. This applies to wreaths, real trees, springs of holly, flowers, and anything else biological that you can find. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
