Easy Homemade Pita Bread Recipe

Posted on May 20, 2023May 21, 2023 by At Home With Joanna

Souvlaki is one of the foods that I constantly crave. Fortunately, we live very close to not just one, but two restaurants that have it on the menu. With that being said, I don’t want to spend an exorbitant amount of money on take-out. And, while I have made lazy souvlakis/gyros/wraps at home, I have always used store-bought pita bread. So, how did I decide to spend my Saturday afternoon? Making this easy homemade pita bread recipe, of course!

These are simple enough to make. I love the fact that I didn’t need to fiddle around with yeast. The fact that I get the health benefits of Greek yogurt is also a plus! However, just like I recommend while making crepes, be prepared to have your first pita be a tester. Depending on your stovetop, pan and familiarity with making such a recipe, the first pita may not turn out to your liking. This is okay! Don’t take it as a sign that the whole batch is ruined. Simply adjust the heat of the stovetop, be mindful of your timing, and try again. You can do it!

Easy Homemade Pita Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 3¾ tsp Baking Powder
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1½ cups 0% Greek yogurt (or sour cream)
  • Optional Dip: Your Favorite Tzatziki Sauce

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the yogurt with a wooden spoon and then use your hands to form TWO large dough balls.
  2. Lightly flour a clean surface and slice each ball into 4 equal parts.
  3. Roll out each piece into a thin circle or oval shape. If you want a perfectly round circle, you can use a round bowl or plate to make the outline and then use a pizza cutter to do the actual slicing. With this method, you’ll have a few pieces left over that can be turned into another (possibly smaller) pita.
  4. Lightly drizzle a cast iron pan with olive oil. Heat on medium to medium-high. I found it worked better while closer to medium-high; keep an eye on them so as not to burn them! Transfer one pita to the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes per side (depending on the temperature you’ve chosen) or until golden brown patches appear. Repeat with the remaining dough.
